Chick House Flats
119 S. Main St. Rockford, IL 61101. Under Construction
Chick House Flats
Chick House Flats occupies the former Chick House hotel, built in 1857 as the Griggs House and renamed in 1888 for Thomas Chick, a former railroad engineer who bought it. The three-story brick hotel — Greek Revival with Italianate detailing — took in travelers on Main Street until 1928, then ran as the Elms until 1951. It is the last nineteenth-century hotel building standing in Rockford, and one of only three pre-Civil War commercial buildings left downtown.
The Chick House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 1997.
Restoration is underway. It reopens in 2027 as Chickhouse Flats — eighteen apartments over ground-floor retail.
